The Division of Languages and Literature offers small class sizes and a dedicated faculty who provide high quality instruction in the study of literature, writing, communication, philosophy, and foreign languages as well as training for those seeking to become secondary classroom teachers. Our goal is to train critically literate scholars, writers, and educators prepared to engage a global society no matter where their degree in English takes them. From the classroom to the boardroom, our graduates go on to careers in education, media, marketing, technology, publishing and countless other fields, while others pursue graduate degrees in literature, creative writing, pedagogy – even law or business.
Some students who have a love of literature or writing don’t necessarily want to major in English but want the opportunity to study it to deepen their literary and cultural knowledge. For those students, we offer minors in English literature, creative writing, and Spanish and a wide variety of elective courses in philosophy, communication, Greek, and literary analysis and critical theory. Virtually every major at Delta State University can benefit from courses offered in the Division of Languages and Literature.
The Division also prides itself in meeting the needs of our diverse student population, especially in our graduate degree programs. The M.Ed. in Secondary Education English, for example, is offered fully online so that full-time teachers can work toward their Class AA teaching license from the comfort of their own homes. Likewise, the M.A. in Liberal Studies offers a flexible curriculum to allow students to customize their course of study to their own specific areas of interest and need. No matter what your area of interest, the Division of Languages and Literature has something of value to offer.
